Fed funds prime rate history
Adjustments to the Federal Funds Target Rate are made by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) usually at regularly scheduled meetings; but can also be adjusted at any time with an emergency meeting. The Fed Funds Rate reported in the chart is based upon the Fed Funds Rate on the first day of each respective month. The Prime Rate is usually adjusted at the same time and in correlation to the adjustments of the Fed Funds Rate, which is set by a special rate setting committee of the Federal Reserve called the FOMC. In recent history, the Prime Interest Rate has been set at 3% over the high end of the range for Fed Funds. Until December 2008, the Federal Reserve set an explicit target rate for the Federal Funds.
