Free trade zones in China are a specific class of special economic zones; an area where goods may be landed, handled, manufactured and re-exported without intervention of the customs authority. China’s first Free Trade Zone opened in Shanghai in 2013 and was seen as a milestone in doing business in China. On 22 August 2013, the State Council approved the establishment of the zone. Officially launched on 29 September 2013 with the backing of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, it is the first free-trade zone in mainland China and covers an area of 240.2 square kilometres (92.7 sq mi). The Tianjin Free Trade Zone opened up in 2015 and is one of the biggest FTZs in China, spanning over 120 sq.km. The FTZ serves an important purpose as it’s the only FTZ in Northern China and built to coordinate the development of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei.

On August 26, China announced it will be expanding pilot free trade zones (FTZ) to six new provinces across the country. These are Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Guanxi, and Yunnan.
