Federal Funds Rate - 62 Year Historical Chart. Shows the daily level of the federal funds rate back to 1954. The fed funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions (banks and credit unions) lend reserve balances to other depository institutions overnight, on an uncollateralized basis. Adjustments to the Federal Funds Target Rate are made by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) usually at regularly scheduled meetings; but can also be adjusted at any time with an emergency meeting. The Fed Funds Rate reported in the chart is based upon the Fed Funds Rate on the first day of each respective month. The Federal Reserve lowered the target range for its federal funds rate by 100bps to 0-0.25 percent and launched a massive $700 billion quantitative easing program during an emergency move on March 15th to protect the US economy from the effects of the coronavirus.
