Oil sands tailings are the remaining sand, water, clay, silt and residual hydrocarbons left after the majority of hydrocarbons are extracted from the ore during our extraction process. Tailings are managed at Suncor’s Base Plant, as well as joint venture operations, Fort Hills and Syncrude. Given the large discrepancy between the numerical predictions on oil-sands fine tailings and experimental observation, and complex phenomena, this article presents three different ap-proaches; large-strain consolidation, sedimentation, and the creep process of analyzing the long-term settlement behavior of oil-sands tailings.
